G2 Road Test Ontario: Complete Guide to What’s Tested and How to Pass

The G2 road test is the first real driving exam every new driver in Ontario has to pass. It is the step that lets you drive on your own for the first time, without a fully licensed driver sitting beside you. That is exciting, but it can also feel stressful if you don’t know what to expect.

This guide explains the G2 road test in simple terms: when you can take it, what the examiner checks, what to bring, how the test is marked, and how to prepare so you can pass on your first try. What Is the G2 Road Test?

Ontario uses a graduated licensing system. New drivers move through two learning levels (G1 and G2) and pass two road tests before they get a full G licence. You have up to five years to finish the whole process.

The G2 road test is the first of those two road tests. It is often called the G1 exit test, because passing it moves you out of the G1 level. Once you pass, you get a G2 licence. You can then drive without another experienced driver in the car, on all Ontario roads, at any time of day in most cases.

When Can You Take the G2 Road Test in Ontario?

After you pass your vision and knowledge tests, you receive a G1 licence. In most cases, you must practise with that G1 for 12 months before you can take the G2 road test.

Two things to keep in mind:

• Your G1 must still be valid. Novice drivers cannot book a road test after their licence expiry date.
• BDE students must be certified on test day. DriveTest can cancel the test if you are enrolled in a BDE course but your driving school has not certified you by the day of your road test.

What Is Tested on the G2 Road Test?

According to the Ontario government, the G2 road test checks basic driving skills such as:

• Turning left and right
• Stopping
• Parallel parking
• Driving on one-way streets
• Lane changes
• Three-point turns
• Driving in residential neighbourhoods
• Traffic lights, stop signs and yield signs

DriveTest also recommends practising these skills in different places, at different times of day (as your licence allows) and in different conditions:

• Starting, stopping and turning
• Reading traffic signs and lights
• Passing vehicles, including bicycles
• Going through controlled and uncontrolled intersections
• Parking, reversing and three-point turns
• Spotting hazards early and being ready for them

In short, the examiner wants to see that you can control the car smoothly, follow the rules of the road and make safe decisions without help.

Does the G2 Road Test Include Highway Driving?

Highway driving is the main focus of the G road test, which is the second road test you take after at least 12 months with your G2. The G2 test is about everyday city and neighbourhood driving. You can learn more about the next step in our G licence road test.

That said, highway practice before your G2 is still useful. With a G1 you cannot drive on 400-series highways with a family member, but you can drive on any road when you are with a driver instructor certified in Ontario.

How Long Does the G2 Road Test Take?

The driving part usually takes about 20 minutes. Plan for more time than that, though. DriveTest asks you to arrive at least 30 minutes early to check in, and the examiner will also check your vehicle and give you a short summary after the drive.

What Should You Bring to Your G2 Road Test?

DriveTest lists these items to bring on test day:

• A vehicle in good working order
• Glasses or contact lenses, if you need them to drive
• Enough gas in the vehicle for the test
• Your current driver’s licence
• A printout of your road test confirmation email
• Money for test fees, only if you are hoping for a standby appointment

Can You Use Your Own Car for the G2 Test?

Yes. DriveTest centres do not provide vehicles. The car can be owned, borrowed or rented, and it does not have to be a driving instructor’s car. It must be a Class G vehicle (a car, van or small truck) and it must meet DriveTest’s vehicle requirements.

Your test can be marked “out-of-order” and not go ahead if there is a problem. Some examples from DriveTest include:

• The vehicle is not in good working order
• You arrive without a vehicle
• You refuse to wear a seat belt
• You do not wear corrective lenses when your licence requires them

What Happens on G2 Test Day?

Knowing the steps ahead of time can calm your nerves. Here is how a typical G2 test day works:

1. Arrive early. Park your car and go inside the DriveTest centre to check in. Most centres have a self-serve kiosk.
2. Go back to your car. Wait there for the driver examiner.
3. Vehicle check. The examiner walks around the car to look for damage, safety hazards or anything that could stop the test.
4. Instructions. The examiner explains the test. They are not allowed to coach you, so ask any questions before you start.
5. The drive. You follow the examiner’s directions while they score your driving using set criteria.
6. Results. At the end, the examiner gives you a short verbal summary of how you did.

The examiner may stop or refuse to start the test if the car is not in good working order, if you show signs of alcohol or drug impairment, or if your driving is not safe enough to finish the test.

How Is the G2 Road Test Marked?

During the drive, the examiner fills out a scoresheet based on set criteria. You do not need to memorize a points system. What matters is showing safe, consistent habits from start to finish.

After the test, you can see where you did well and where you need work:

• If your test was done on a tablet in the last 15 days, you can download your results online after verifying your identity.
• After 15 days, you can request a copy at any DriveTest centre.
• Paper copies of the scoresheet are available on request within 13 months of the test date.

What Are the Most Common G2 Test Mistakes?

Every test is different, but these are skills driving instructors see new drivers struggle with most often. Practise them until they feel automatic:

• Rolling stops. Come to a full stop at stop signs and red lights, behind the line.
• Missed shoulder checks. Mirrors are not enough. Look over your shoulder before lane changes, turns, pulling out and parking.
• Speed control. Driving too fast is unsafe, but driving far below the limit or hesitating too long can also cost you.
• Late or missing signals. Signal early and cancel it after the move.
• Poor lane position. Stay centred in your lane and finish turns in the correct lane.
• Rushed parking. Take your time with parallel parking and three-point turns. Smooth and safe beats fast.

How Can You Prepare to Pass the G2 Road Test on the First Try?

Good preparation is the best way to feel confident on test day. Here are practical tips that work:

1. Study the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook. DriveTest recommends it before any road test. It explains the rules the examiner is watching for.
2. Practise in real conditions. Drive at different times of day, in different weather and in both busy and quiet areas.
3. Drill the tested skills. Spend focused time on parallel parking, three-point turns, intersections and lane changes.
4. Take a mock test. A lesson with a driving instructor who acts like an examiner shows you what to fix before the real test.
5. Talk yourself through it. Saying “mirror, signal, shoulder check” out loud during practice helps build the habit.
6. Get your car ready early. Check lights, signals, brakes and gas a day or two before the test.
7. Rest and arrive early. Sleep well, eat something and give yourself plenty of time to check in.

What Happens If You Fail the G2 Road Test?

Failing is disappointing, but it is common and it is not the end of the road. Your scoresheet shows the areas you need to improve. When you have had more practice, you can book another test.

• You can take as many road tests as you need, as long as your licence is valid.
• You generally have to wait at least 10 days between tests.
• Road test fees apply each time.
• If your G1 licence has expired, you will need to start the process over and pay the test fees again.

What Happens After You Pass the G2 Test?

Congratulations! Go back inside the DriveTest centre to apply your test results. You will get a temporary licence that is valid for 90 days or until your photo card arrives in the mail. If you do not apply your results within 12 months, they are no longer valid.

As a G2 driver, you must still keep a zero blood alcohol level and carry only as many passengers as there are working seatbelts. Drivers aged 19 and under also have passenger limits between midnight and 5 a.m.

To book, you will need your Ontario driver’s licence number (including the expiry date), your first, second and third choice of test location, and your preferred date and time. Remember to cancel at least 48 hours before your appointment to avoid a cancellation fee.
